In 2008, The Design Portfolio set up a memorial prize (The Vince Ma Prize) with Reading University. The prize was established in order to award recognition to second year students studying within the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication in memory of Vince Ma, a former student of the University and former Director of The Design Portfolio, who died tragically in January 2008.

We established the Memorial Prize as a way of keeping Vince’s memory alive for as long as possible. Vince was always helping others so it seemed fitting to partner Reading University and sponsor the Vince Ma Memorial Prize, awarding Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards to students, each offering a cash prize, with the Gold Award also providing a summer work placement at The Design Portfolio. Judging takes place in June, the work placement takes place in August or December and the presentation takes place in November each year at Reading University.
