Last week, the corporate community gathered at The Queens Hotel in Leeds for the annual Yorkshire Business Awards, which was organised by Variety, the children’s charity. Variety provides practical, tangible help that makes an immediate difference to sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and their families across the UK, so Design Portfolio was delighted to sponsor the event again this year. We also took a table and enjoyed the afternoon with quite a few of our clients, celebrating achievements and recognising success in the region.

To get everyone in the Christmas spirit, guests were greeted by tuneful carols from the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School choir while they waited for the event to begin.

BBC Breakfast’s Louise Minchin took to the stage as host once again and guest speaker Sir Chris Bonington impressed the audience with extraordinary tales from his inspirational 60-year career. Sir Bonington’s speech even included a clip of him tackling the iconic Old Man of Hoy, off the north coast of Scotland, something which he did to mark his 80th birthday!

As for the awards, the winners included Morrisons (Board of the Year); Huddersfield Town Chairman, Dean Hoyle (Business Leader of the Year); Pelsis (Best SME); and Heck! Food Ltd (Best Young Business).

The evening concluded with the wonderful Rosemary Shrager accepting her lifetime achievement award, the aptly named Bobbie Caplin OBE Yorkshire Legend Award.

Congratulations again to all of the winners and a big well done to everyone who donated. Over £111,000 was raised this year, which is fantastic.

As always, we look forward to next year!
